The Wanderers keeps Johannesburg's cricket in the northern suburbs, which is where most visitors end up staying too. The real choice is between the big, well-connected hubs and the quieter tree-lined streets nearer the ground.

The Wanderers Stadium

The Wanderers in Illovo is known as the Bullring for its steep, encircling stands and the noise they trap on a full day. It sits in the northern suburbs, near both Sandton and Rosebank.

Recognised areas to stay in Johannesburg

The areas below are established places to stay, covered without ranking them or recommending specific hotels. Choose the one that best matches how close you want to be to the cricket and the kind of trip you want.

Sandton

The city's business and shopping centre, with plenty of hotels, secure pedestrian precincts around Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square, and a Gautrain station straight to the airport. The Wanderers is a short drive away.

Convenience, safety and transport

Rosebank

A smaller, walkable district between Sandton and town, with hotels, a Gautrain station, galleries and weekend markets. It is handy for The Wanderers and a little more low-key than Sandton.

Best for
Walkability and a balanced base

Melrose, Illovo & Houghton

The quiet, tree-lined suburbs right around The Wanderers, where the accommodation runs to boutique hotels and guesthouses. These are the closest streets to the ground.

Airport and transport

Nearest airport
O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB). O.R. Tambo, in Kempton Park east of the city, is the busiest airport in Africa and where most overseas visitors to the tournament will land. The Gautrain rapid-rail line links it directly to Sandton and Rosebank.
Getting around
For the corridor it covers — the airport, Sandton, Rosebank and on to Pretoria — the Gautrain is the quickest way to sidestep the traffic. Off that line, ride-hailing does the job. Rent a car only if you mean to range further across Gauteng.
Season
This is Highveld country, high and open. Spring days sit in the mid-to-high twenties Celsius, but the afternoons often close with a short, sharp thunderstorm — reason enough to keep an umbrella or a light rain jacket to hand.
